A general home inspection is a comprehensive examination of a property's overall condition. It is typically conducted by a licensed home inspector. Some areas that a general inspection typically cover include:

  1. Structural Components: The inspector will assess the condition of the foundation, walls, ceilings, floors, roof, and overall structural integrity of the property.

  2. Exterior: This includes examining the exterior walls, siding, doors, windows, trim, and the condition of the property's drainage systems.

  3. Roofing: The inspector will evaluate the roof's age, condition, materials, and look for any signs of leaks, damage, or needed repairs.

  4. Plumbing: The plumbing system will be inspected for leaks, water pressure, functionality of fixtures, drains, water heaters, and the condition of supply lines.

  5. Electrical Systems: The inspector will check the electrical panel, wiring, outlets, switches, light fixtures, and ensure compliance with safety codes.

  6. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning): This includes inspecting the heating and cooling systems, assessing their condition, and checking for proper functionality.

  7. Interior: The inspector will evaluate the condition of walls, ceilings, floors, doors, windows, staircases, and assess for any signs of water damage, cracks, or other issues.

  8. Insulation and Ventilation: The inspector will examine the insulation levels, ventilation systems, and ensure proper airflow within the property.

  9. Appliances: The inspector may test and assess the condition of built-in appliances such as the stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, and garbage disposal.

  10. Attic and Crawlspace: These areas will be inspected for proper insulation, ventilation, signs of water damage, pests, and structural issues.


It's important to note that a general home inspection is a visual examination of accessible (not inside walls) areas as and is not an invasive or technically exhaustive inspection. The inspector should provide a detailed report with findings and recommendations for any necessary repairs or further specialized inspections if needed.
